Which is the Best Platform to Sell Digital Products in 2025?

Congratulations, creator! You have created content and built an audience, so the next step is to start monetizing your passions and skills! Selling digital products has become complicated due to VAT laws in the EU and around the world, so choosing the right platform is vital.

Make an informed decision

As a seller, you have two options; either you give the platform extra commission to take care of collecting and administration of VAT and other taxes. Or you do it yourself but bear in mind the additional burden you will have for a lower commission.

Take time to research what taxes you will have to pay on sales based on your audience’s location and where your business is based.

Manage your own eCommerce store

You do not need to use a platform to sell products; you can do this on your own website. WordPress has the WooCommerce plugin, which works well with payment processors like Stripe and PayPal.

Squarespace also has a solution that is worth checking out. Shopify is another solution to check out but be aware of the monthly costs.

Do you want the stress of managing your own eCommerce store and getting tied up in tax laws? It’s certainly something to bear in mind.

So, which is the best platform to sell digital products online?

Gumroad

Gumroad is an eCommerce platform where you can sell digital products from ebooks, memberships, courses and much more. Your audience can purchase in most currencies with a debit or credit card, plus services like PayPal.

The benefit for creators is that Gumroad deals with the VAT based on the location of the buyer, and you do not need to worry about processing or reporting.

Remember that Gumroad does not have options to pay with Apple or Google Pay and other popular payment services like Braintree and Payoneer.

There is minimal customization, although there is a WordPress plugin to integrate your product pages into your website. We recommend you check their pricing page for the latest commission rates and charges.

Podia

First impressions are that with Podia, you have several options based on the stage of your business. You can use the free option but pay an 8% commission per sale, but you do have to pay a monthly fee to make use of selling courses, webinars and unlimited products and coaching programs.

For the free option, you can sell one download and host your website with a free subdomain. To use your domain then, you will have to be on one of the paid packages, which at the time of writing starts from $33 a month.

If you have one product, this might be an option. The paid packages do not include the payment processing fees, so bear this in mind.

The 8% commission does include any payment processing fees, and you can integrate your Stripe or PayPal account to be paid for sales.

Notably, there’s no mention of them dealing with the VAT side of things, so you might want to inquire about this if it’s an important feature.

Sellfy

This platform goes further than just being able to offer digital products.

Sellfy allows you to sell merchandise and print-on-demand services, which is an added bonus for content creators – that said, while there are no transaction fees, you will have to pay a monthly fee to be able to sell digital products.

With the starter package, you can sell unlimited digital products and subscriptions, and it includes a handy email marketing feature where you can keep in touch with the people who buy your products.

You’re limited to $10K a month before you have to move on to the following package, which costs more but has additional features like removing the Sellfy branding and being able to upsell products.

The site does mention that Advanced VAT & tax settings are available on all packages, including the free box, so this should make sure you do not have to deal with the collection and reporting of VAT and other taxes.

Send Owl

A service that has a ton of features, including PDF stamping, where you can add a watermark so that your digital product is not copied and sold.

You can sell memberships, subscriptions, and digital and physical products. Surprisingly, you can also drip content which is great for delivering content over time.

On Send Owl the pricing is flexible depending on what suits your business. Pay per sale or a flat monthly rate. With the per sale option, you pay a 5% commission, but there is a minimum order that applies, so check out those fees.

Like Gumroad, you can sell software on the platform and generate licence keys which is a great additional feature. You have 1 click upsells, and EU VAT rules can be applied to ensure that you are following the rules, but there is no mention that they process and report VAT and other taxes, though.

AppSumo

First impressions when visiting the site, it looks like a place where you can buy software and apps, but dig a little deeper, and you can see that it is a massive digital marketplace for all sorts of digital products.

Sign up to the AppSumo partner program, and you can sell WordPress Plugins, Chrome extensions, and the usual digital products like ebooks and courses.

What looks interesting is that once you list your product, AppSumo will promote your product within its marketplace. If this results in sales, who knows, but they suggest that you will expand your audience.

We didn’t like that the prices of selling on the platform are not prominent on the website. We had to dig around to find that there are no fees for listing a product, but you will pay a commission per sale.

If the person who buys your product is a new AppSumo user, you receive 95% of the sale, whereas if they are already on the platform, you receive 70% of the sale after any AppSumo Plus member discounts. On the page, we found no mention of payment processing fees or if they deal with VAT.

No platform is perfect

We feel that Gumroad is the best option for creators who do not want to deal with the VAT and tax rules, and the charges per sale are worth it. We’ve learnt that no platform is 100% perfect. Weigh up the pros and cons depending on where your business is located and the location of your buyers.

Hopefully, this article has given you some ideas on which is the best platform to sell digital products online.
