How Do I Get Links to My Website? Try this Strategy. It Works

As a content creator, you must learn how to optimize your content for search engines. To build trust in your website, you need high-profile websites within your niche and industry linking to your content.

Building links is one of the more challenging tasks you will have to undertake. SkillShare features courses on Search Engine Optimization that we recommend you check out to learn more.

You might be the best storyteller online, but it will not get seen if you are not optimizing your content.

This article will answer a common question: how do I get links to my website?

Try this strategy for yourself

The strategy that we will share with you today works, and this is through our experience as content creators with various online publications.

You need to acquire links on high-profile websites but in a natural way. Imagine receiving a link to your website in an article in the New York Times or, in our case, on Business Insider or Forbes.

For link building, you need to introduce a strategy and be patient. There are no quick wins regarding search engine optimization – we are no experts, but we love to share what works well for us so you can try it yourself.

Here are the steps to get links to your website:

Step 1 – Sign up to ‘Help a Reporter Out

Help a Reporter (HARO) is an excellent service where journalists and writers request help in the form of quotes and advice to help them write articles on specific subjects. The service is free as a source and a great way to build relationships with people who are writing about your niche.

Step 2: Browse through the topics

Once signed up, you will receive an email with a massive list of subjects journalists seek help on. Browse through the requests, identify topics within your niche or industry, and read what they need help on.

Most journalists mention where your quote and advice will be published, so make sure it’s either a site within your industry or a high-profile site where your target audience is active.

Remember, you cannot assume they will link to your website, but having published quotes will increase your authority, and new opportunities might arise from the exposure.

Step 3 – Reach out to a journalist

Once you have identified a story topic you feel knowledgeable about, reach out to the journalist. There are two ways to approach this: contact the journalist with your contact details and website, then tell them how you can help. Or send them the quote and advice requested.

The problem with the second approach is that they might use your content and then not attribute the quote and advice to you. It’s unethical, but that would not stop some journalists and writers.

With the first approach, you might miss their deadline, but at least you can confirm if a link would be included. There’s no right or wrong approach; it’s just worth considering which is the best for you.

Step 4 – network with the journalist

The HARO system does not reveal the contact details of the journalist you are contacting. During the communication, if you find out their name, search for them on LinkedIn or see if they have a website you can keep in contact with.

That way, when you are writing about topics they cover, you can reach out and offer quotes when topics within your niche are trending. This is a great way to build relationships with journalists and get links.
