What Advice Would You Give to a Content Creator Starting Out?

At Creator Trail, we love answering your questions, and this week an email landed in our inbox from a reader who asked “what advice you would give to a content creator starting out?” Rather than send them an email response, we thought it would be more beneficial for all readers if we answered it here.

There are four areas of advice we would give to new content creators.

Create content that you are passionate about

Figure out the type of content you are passionate about creating. Sara loves writing, Graham loves podcasting, and Darren loves video.

Nothing is worse than working on a task that you find mundane.

Once you have figured out the type of content you want to create, find your preferred platform and learn how to create content and grow your audience.

If you love making videos, head to YouTube and learn how to attract subscribers to your channel. Love podcasting, then listen to experienced podcasters talk about how to build and promote one.

Spend time learning; it can only benefit you in the long term. Use a site like Skillshare to learn new skills in the type of content you want to focus on. Also, read our content creation articles to learn more from us.

Find your niche

So, once you have figured out the type of content you want to create, the next step is to research what niche you are best suited to. What are you passionate about? What skills and experience can you share with people?

Focusing on your niche is going to help you build an audience quicker. Yes, you will have a smaller audience, but it will be easier to distribute and promote your content with a less competitive niche. Don’t be a craft content creator; instead, focus on crochet, woodwork, or whatever is your passion.

Research your niche based on the type of content you want to create. Look at what other content creators publish, and think about how you can do it better.

Decide the goal of your content

At this stage, you know what type of content you want to create and the niche you want to focus on; the next step is to decide on the goal for your audience.

Do you want to teach people how to play the guitar in 8 weeks or help students pass an accountancy qualification? Think about the content you need to create and the journey you will take your audience.

At Creator Trail, we focus on writing articles, and our goal is to help new creators create content, build an audience and monetize their passions. What will be your goal for the people who consume your content?

Know your audience

Next, you need to know who your audience is. We aren’t only talking about demographics but honestly understanding what makes your audience tick.

How does your audience prefer to consume content, and what time of the day? What pain points do they have that you can help them with to reach the end goal? Where are they active online so you can distribute your content?

Spend time getting to know the people you want to help and how you can help them. Read our audience building articles for great advice to get you started.

Before creating any content, you must have figured out these 4 areas. Hopefully, this has answered your question, what advice would you give to a content creator starting out? Need more advice? Come and say hello and get in touch.
