As a creator, you have to value your content highly when it comes to working with clients. What you create will attract an audience on social media and convert it into potential income. More so if they use your content for advertising or to promote their products or services.
The client wants to hire you because they lack the skills to create highly engaging, quality content. Never undervalue yourself, and do not focus only on how much time it’s going to take to complete, but also consider your skills and the impact the content will have on the company.

The location of your client
It works both ways; the client will have a rate of pay in mind based on your location, so you should also consider this.
No freelancer will admit this publicly, but if you have clients in the United Kingdom, you are likely to charge less than a client in the United States.
Usually, the dollar is stronger against most currencies, so consider this in your quote when converting the price.

The type of content
Writing 250 words for Twitter posts will take less time than filming and editing a 60-second video.
Designing graphics can take a few minutes using templates and graphics with tools like Canva to several days when working on your unique designs that take time to sketch and then draw/edit.
What will be involved in creating the content your client is asking you to make? Write down the tasks required to create the social media content. Will you have to do any research before creating? How many reiterations will you offer a client?
These are essential questions to ask yourself before quoting the client. Do not do what some freelancers offer, and that’s endless reiterations.
You’re asking for problems and end up making amendments continuously. Give the client 2-3 reiterations from the initial content you create.
Is this a one-off task or a regular project?
Another factor is whether this is a one-off task or if your client wants you to create the content regularly. If you receive them every week, you might like to offer them a small discount, but do not offer this straightaway.
The rate of pay formula
As you may have realized from this article, we’ve not told you how much to charge for social media content because so many factors are at play. We have a formula that might help you, though.
- Write down a monthly net amount you would like to earn after deducting taxes and other expenses.
- Times that value by 12 to get an annual amount, and then divide by the number of weeks you want to work each year.
- The figure will be what you would like to earn each week.
- Then, work out how many hours you want to work each week.
- From this, you will have your hourly rate of pay.
Example: Robert wants to make $5,000 gross per month.
That is $60,000 per year. He wants to take six weeks a year for vacation. So, he plans to work 46 weeks a year. $60,000 divided by 46 = $1,305 per week.
He would like to work 35 hours a week. So, the hourly rate of pay that Robert should charge is around $38 per hour to achieve this goal.
This should be the base rate of pay, but you might have to charge less or more depending on the work involved in social media content creation. You also have to factor in taxes and other payments for being self-employed.
What’s important is that you are happy with the rate you are charging your client, so spend time researching and ensure you are paid appropriately for your time.
