What are the Challenges of Content Creation in 2025?

At Creator Trail, the focus is to guide you on the journey of making a living by sharing your skills and passions through content. The frustration starts when trying to build an audience and get your content discovered.

Let’s answer the question, what are the challenges of content creation?

Getting discovered is much more challenging

Writing content on a website and getting it discovered is more difficult than when my first blog launched in 2005.

There is an immense amount of noise in the search results on Google and social media, and it’s challenging to promote your content due to algorithms. These social networks want to keep people on their platforms.

Frustrations with content creation

When you’re spending months writing blog posts with very a few people reading, you then obsess over Google Analytics to find that they are only spending a few seconds consuming the content.

Or, if you are creating videos on YouTube, where millions of people watch content daily, it’s frustrating to find your videos only getting 10 or 12 views, especially when you have put in a lot of time and effort.

It is soul-destroying and frustrating, and why most content creators ultimately give up, move on to a new niche, or quit creating content.

Why are we sharing these challenges with you? We’ve been there, worn the T-shirt, and can understand how frustrated you are.

Learn from my experiences

From my 15+ years of experience creating content online, two tasks have helped me build websites that attracted over 100,000 unique visitors a month.

My first blog, Travel Rants, took off because I was consistently writing content and networking to get my message out there. Back then, blogs were popular, and everyone commented on them.

Social media was on the horizon, but blog comments and forum posts were where you could build an audience if you added value to the conversation.

Going on to blogs and forums within my niche and getting involved in the conversation helped drive my target audience to the blog. Sadly, both blog comments and forums are non-existent, which is incredibly sad.

So, today, how can the same strategy be used?

Your distribution strategy is vital

It’s hard – forums and blogs did not have algorithms; they were communication channels. Social media is tough to break into as a new content creator.

You have to have a strategy to distribute your content; this is the only way to be discovered. It can feel that you need to be all over social media, but we believe in focusing on one network and spending time nurturing your audience.

There are no quick ways to build an audience, and it’s for this reason that it’s so crucial that you love the content creation process.

Choose one type of content and one social network, but do not just post links to your content – this will not work. You instead need to post 90% unique content to attract the right people and 10% to promote your content.

So, write content on your website, optimize it for the search engines, and look at ways of building links to your blog posts.

Additionally, have a Twitter account and write content that helps people within your niche. Learn what content works best on Twitter and focus on understanding the algorithm.

There are no quick wins with content creation and building audiences. It takes time, consistency, and patience, and you love content creation.

The reality of content creation

Depending on how much content you create, expect to spend 6-12 months networking and distributing your content before seeing movement in visitors to your website or social media followers.

Stand out and get creative

Think of fun ways to get your content discovered – and yes, being a little controversial certainly helps with getting noticed. When writing Travel Rants, the likes of the BBC, Lonely Planet, and other big publishers linked to it because it was starting controversial conversations that no one else was.

Don’t be controversial for the sake of it, though – you want to ensure that your content is trustworthy and that your points are accurate.

Start a campaign that looks at a particular problem and tries to get media attention. When it comes to getting your content discoverable, you have to think outside of the box a little because the internet is awash with content.

Quick recap

So, to recap. Create content consistently and love what you create. Network with people who can help you get discovered. Create a distribution strategy for your content and initially focus on one social network, but do not just promote. Think of fun ways to get your brand and content seen.

Hopefully, this article has helped answer the question: what are the challenges of content creation and provide solutions to try and reduce content creators’ frustrations with building an audience online?
