Do this One Task to Beat Perfectionism as a Content Writer

As a content writer who suffers from perfectionism, the struggle is real, and it can seriously affect you mentally when all you want to do is to write content. To build an audience, you need to be able to write and publish consistently, and this strategy has really helped us.

Do this one task to beat perfectionism as a content writer.

5-day writing challenge

Firstly, think at what time of the day you are the most productive. For us, it’s the first thing we do in the morning. You need to schedule an hour a day from Monday to Friday to complete this challenge.

Complete this challenge, and after 5 days, your perfectionism will drastically improve or vanish entirely.

If you haven’t already, we suggest you read this article on how to write a blog post for beginners in six steps. It’s a must-read for this challenge.

Title and keyword research

Think about the challenges your audience faces. For the first 10 minutes, write down a title and subtitles for a topic your audience is searching for on the search engines. It could be a frequently asked question or a how-to article. Choose a topic that you can write about without any research.

The title needs to be eye-catching but gets searched. Ideally, a title that is not too competitive in the search engines.

Focus on writing what comes naturally

Once you have the title and subtitles for the next 30 minutes, you need to write. Aim for 500-700 words. At this stage, just brain dump. Do not worry about grammar or spelling mistakes; just write what comes naturally to you.

The following 5 minutes is an opportunity for you to structure your article. Have an introduction to entice the reader, and then 3-5 paragraphs with an ending and call to action. The goal after 30 minutes is to have a finished article, which includes everything you want to get across to your audience.

Proofreading and editing

Then, you need to spend 15 minutes editing and proofreading your content. We use Grammarly because that’s all it takes to go through the article’s structure based on our goals with its AI-powered engine.

Fix grammar and spelling mistakes, and then read through the article to ensure everything reads well. After 60 minutes, you should have a new piece of content that you can publish on your website and distribute.

Publish the same day or schedule

We recommend that you publish it on the same day or schedule so that perfectionism doesn’t stop you from putting this content out into the world.

The next steps are to create the post on your website, source images, optimise the content for the search engines and distribute it to your preferred social networks and communities.

An essential rule from this challenge is to not spend more than 30 minutes writing and 15 minutes editing. Once you have read the article, publish and move on. To reiterate, read once and move on.

Beating perfectionism as a writer

The outcome of this challenge was that we have published so more content, and perfectionism has not gotten in the way of building our audience. Some days, we’ve even written more than one article; yes, our productivity shot up!

So, do this one task to beat perfectionism as a content writer.
